چکیده
We present the timing and spectral properties of the transient Be/X-ray binary pulsar 3A 0535+262 during quiescence using three observations with the narrow field imaging instruments (NFI) of BeppoSAX. Assuming a distance of 2 kpc for this system, the 2–10 keV X-ray luminosities measured from the three observations are in the range of 1.5–4.0 × 10 33 erg s −1 , indicating a very low rate of accretion. We report the detection of pulsations at a very low luminosity of 2 × 10 33 erg s −1 during one of the three observations, though at this accretion rate the system is expected to be in the centrifugally inhibited regime. The X-ray spectra for the unpulsed observations are best modeled as power law type while a combined model of power law and black-body is required to fit the pulsed spectrum.

Detection of X-ray pulsations from the Be/X-ray transient A 0535+26 during a disc loss phase of the primary
Using the RossiXTE experiment, we detect weak Xray emission from the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A 0535+26 at a time when the optical counterpart V725 Tau displayed Hα in absorption, indicating the absence of a circumstellar disc. The X-ray radiation is strongly modulated at the 103.5-s pulse period of the neutron star, confirming that it originates from A 0535+26. The source is weaker than in...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of 1A 0535+262 in quiescence
Accretion onto magnetized neutron stars is expected to be centrifugally inhibited at low accretion rates. Several sources including 1A 0535+262, however, are known to pulsate in quiescence at luminosities below the theoretical limit predicted for the onset of the centrifugal barrier. Here we present the results of an analysis of a ∼ 50 ks long XMM-Newton observation of 1A 0535+262 in quiescence...
متن کاملAquila X-1 from Outburst to Quiescence: the Onset of the Propeller Effect and Signs of a Turned-on Rotation-powered Pulsar
We report on the March-April 1997 BeppoSAX observations of Aql X-1, the first to monitor the evolution of the spectral and time variability properties of a neutron star soft X–ray transient from the outburst decay to quiescence. We observed a fast X–ray flux decay, which brought the source luminosity from ∼ 1036 to ∼ 1033 ergs−1 in less than 10 days. The X–ray spectrum showed a power law high e...
متن کاملROSAT observations of A0538-66 during quiescence
Wediscuss serendipitousROSATobservations of the Be transient A0538-66, which contains the fastest known accreting X-ray pulsar (69 ms). We show that this transient is detected several times during quiescence at a level of about 1034−35 erg s−1. Considering this low luminosity it is more likely that X-rays are produced by matter falling onto the neutron star magnetosphere, rather than onto the s...
متن کاملXMM–Newton observation of the Be/neutron star system RX J0146.9+6121: a soft X–ray excess in a low luminosity accreting pulsar
We report on the XMM–Newton observation of the Be/neutron star X–ray binary system RX J0146.9+6121, a long period (∼ 23 m) pulsar in the NGC 663 open cluster. The X–ray luminosity decreased by a factor two compared to the last observation carried out in 1998, reaching a level of ∼ 1 × 10 erg s, the lowest ever observed in this source. The spectral analysis reveals the presence of a significant ...
